Genesis 5-8, Movie Credits and Noah

The beginning of my reading tonight was, of course, genealogy… I know that it is important and that God placed everything in the Bible for a reason, but genealogies always make me think of the credits in movies. They go on and on and on...and I am not convinced that any of us really pay a lot of attention to them…they feel like a lot of meaningless words on a page.

I guess patience isn’t really my thing.

After digging through the first genealogies, we come to the story of Noah. What really caught my attention about his life was his incredible patience. Noah spent a lot of time waiting on God’s plan.

Just to give a timeline

First…Noah spend more than 100 years building the ark.

After building this thing…Noah and his family (not to mention hundreds of animals) sit on the ark and wait for a week before anything happens.

Rain, Rain, Rain—40 days

10 months before they have any hope of getting out

They waited a week between all of the bird expeditions!

Altogether more than a year on the ark!

Seriously…Noah knew how to simply trust and to wait on God. I am certain that I could not have done what Moses did. A moment probably would have come when I said “Ok God, this is nuts” The thing was—Noah continued to follow God’s plan even when it meant waiting on God for 100 years. When it meant being on a boat with his family and stinky animals for a year. There must have been times when Noah wondered if God was ever going to act, but Noah acted anyway.

Nothing made him think twice…he simply waited and followed.

I barely have the patience to read through a genealogy…
