Genesis 9-12, Legacy

Genesis 9-12

This ends a rather relaxing day of enjoying my family on the last real day of Christmas break before I get back to my real life and real schedule… hopefully blogging is something that continues…

My thought tonight ties into the idea of blessings and curses.

Chapter 9 tells the story of Canaan and of this sins…to make a long, and probably disgusting story simple….

Shortly after seeing God act in an incredible way, Canaan chooses to horribly disrespect his father and to ignore the path that God set before him. In doing this, he placed his ancestors under a curse and took something major away from his family. By his choice to ignore God’s path, he was cursed and he became a curse to his descendants.

Chapter 12 tells a different kind of story…Abraham heard God’s call and he acted upon it. This world has not been the same since. Through Abraham’s faithfulness, the glory of God was revealed, God blessed Abraham and the rest of human existence was blessed by Abraham. Abraham was blessed and he became a blessing.

I love that these two stories are placed so near to each other. It really illustrates the fact that we really have no idea of what impact a simple choice or action is going to have on both the rest of out lives and upon the lives of others.

These stories contrast one another in order to show the choice that we have…

We can be blessed to be a blessing, or we can be cursed to be a curse.
